LANC Controls
« on: December 13, 2002, 03:04:00 AM »

Greetings, folks.  I just spent several hours looking at the systems, and following the various links, and I must say that it has been very informative.

10 days ago I completed my hand held unit, based, in part, on the Johnny Lee site, and it seems to be working quite well.

I am trying to work out if I have the commitment (and to be honest, the need) for a Vest mounted Sled, although it would be fun to experiment with it simply for the geek factor.  I have read the various warnings on the Tips page, and take them seriously, although I have a friend who can machine the Titanium I would probably be using for the Arm, so we shall see.

Does anyone have any information as to how to program a unit to send the correct LANC Codes to control the Zoom/StartStop controls on a Sony Camera, as I would be trying to build that into the hand yoke, both on the Vest unit and the handheld that I currently have.

Anyway, I am heading overseas (from Australia) for the Christmas break with my wife, and will be trying to have a peek at any systems I can see in the US or Europe as I am passing through (wife permitting, of course  :P  )

So, thanks for putting the site together; there are few, if any, Stabilised systems that are outside of the Television Studios in Western Australia, so getting information locally would be too painful to contemplate.

Andrew Campbell.

For a LANC Controller:

You also buy fairly inexpensive LANC controllers here:

However, generally zooming is rarely used on a Steadicam shot.  You also don't really need to use titanium on your arm.  Aluminum for the structure and steel for the hardware is good enough.  The only place on the arm that I've seen titanium used is on the pivot pins and the socket block in place of steel to save some weight.
