Finally it's here...glidecam modification for the v16/v20
« on: August 16, 2004, 09:11:00 PM »

I've just browse through and again I'm impress by the work that charles has gone through. First, I'll like to congrats Cody for the 3D drawings. ":eek"  Charles has couldn't have chosen a better person. Nicely done. Slightly darker backgroung but this is due to the color background on the 3D drawings that Cody has used. This isn't so discouraging because the drawings are very well done.":D"

Again, I like the book is laid out from the phraises, intro to the final comments. Oh yeah, don't forget the pics in this book. Again, Charles doesn't leave it out. Like his second first book, he carries on the trend of filling the book with pics.

As he mentioned before he uses a mixture of both 3D drawings and acrtual pics to convey the meaning so you don't have to firgure out how it will look before it's done. He simply does it for you.

He also includes 3D drawings of how his next rig will look like( or he has probably already completed it). The are also pics of various Glidecam owners and some methods they used to spice up thier rig. Theres even pics of a guy who has turn his Glidecam v8 vest into back-mounted one.":eek"

Really cool. All this to give other builders a sense of what can be done. Great inspiration.

When I read it through I'll give my final assesment. So far, I like it.":smokin"

Aloha Gustav,

Just wondering if you have a Glidecam rig too? And if so which model?

Hi Tracy. No I do not have a glidecam. I book the book with the hope of using the methods described on a homebuilt rig. I was thínking of buying the glidecan v8 but unfortunately the v8 is a bit limited in terms of the modifications you can do on it described in the book.

If that was to happen I had to completely saw off the part of the lower post in order to fit the new base; and I wasn't sure if I was going to be satisfied with the v8 to justify making tht big of a mod.":rolleyes"

Who knows I might just end up buying a v16 but I wanted to give my hand at building to see what my skills would produce.":p"

Anyway, so far, according to what Charles has in the book, the modifications can be used on any other low budget model but some alteration would have to be made.

That's correct. As I mentioned in the book the Glidecam v16/v20 models ware a better choice because it is stll used by a lot of pros and it was the easiest to convert.

It was also the one I was more familier with. The other low level rigs could work as well but I thing a little more mod would be neceassary.

When I first started looking @ the HBS site over a year ago I remember Tim Le, (I hope I spelt his name correctly. ) advising me to go & buy a rig instead of trying to build one through trial & error. I had looked @ the Bason, Magiq & several others. The Bason rig had more complaints than anything else & when I tried to contact them for info. it was slow or no response. But Charles is correct a lot of pros were modifying the V series & they made me a deal I couldn't refuse. Everything I get never stays stock for long. Always looking for more power & thanks to Charles book, I now get to "Hot Rod " my steadi rig too. W/ so many big TV productions here in Hawaii from every major network, steadi rig ops are in big demand. My friend who does craft services for every major production that comes to town told me the pecking order on a set goes ( And specifically in this order. ) 1) God, 2) Director, 3) Stedi Op. So the more versatile the rig, the better the offers.
