As some of you may be aware, the above web site has been online for some time now - in fact I discovered it well before I found the H.B.S site. The site currently advertises a book titled "killer camera rigs that you can build". For reasons that will be clear as you read on, I can only review and comment on part of the book, namely the "shock corridor stabilizer"
The site is run by Dan Selakovich, who also designed the rigs featured in the book. At the time that I ordered, Dan was running a special offer whereby you could buy one of two disc's on offer - or both and receive the actual book free! (or something like that!) I chose to buy the disk featuring the stabilizer mentioned above. Dans site claims that instructions to build the rigs are complete and exhaustive, I can and will gladly attest to that!
With the instructions being on disk, Dan was also able to include a couple of quicktime movies showing how well the equipment functioned. The movies are however available for download from the site.
The manual itself covers some 102 pages; profusely illustrated with photographs and a full step by step explanation of what is happening at each stage.
No one working from this book is going to be left thinking "how do I do that bit?" Dan himself is a very nice and approachable individual, I mailed him several times for advice on alternative components/building techniques - and he got right back to me. Fast, friendly & very helpful, in fact he puts me in mind of another designer who's plans I built from
Going on the stabilizer plans, I would have no hesitation in recommending Dans book as a worthy addition to any builder.excerpts from the book are on the site, and I would assume it's all written to the same overall standard.
It must be borne in mind though that Dans design is for a handheld unit, If you are looking for a full system, i.e with arm/vest etc, Cody has the edge. For someone not wanting to get to "involved" in a lengthy project - or only needs to use his/her stabilizer for short periods of time, Dans design is ideal; and as a bonus it's possible to build it over a weekend
