My second topic for the day. So many questions! Can anyone describe the ideal foot alignment and tracking for walking with a Steadicam? I've done martial arts for 15 years now, but nothing has tested my 'root' as much as using a stabiliser!
My issue comes from the angle of the body in relation to the stabiliser. In a straight ahead position it is easy to walk, but since the body needs to be angled in towards the rig this makes walking with stability harder. My feeling is that I don't want to place one foot directly in front of the other (imagining a line on the floor and both feet being placed directly on that line) because of instability. By the same token having the feet slightly apart (feet moving along their own parallel lines) could cause more sway. Also the angling in means that rolling from heel to toe is also harder.
Coming from martial arts I realise how important the feet are, almost above anything else. The lines and positions the feet take even in a straight forward walk with the rig was something that I was hoping would be covered in Jerry's book. Switch footwork was covered, but not basic walking foot position. Can anyone shed any light on this aspect of operating?
