Home made stabilizer help
« on: January 21, 2010, 09:51:53 PM »

Hi

I'm working in making a sort of a flycam stabilizer on my own.
After searching the web and this site/forum it seemed quite easy to build a working one, the worst part being the handle rig.

Ok, i managed to build a 3D one, quite sophisticated with 3 bearings and the help of a former mechanic.

The body is from a mic boom pole, the top a plate from an indian company.

The result is what you'll can see on the pictures.

The problem, I can't manage to put it working.

I Had some weight on the bottom but maybe too much. The all stuff is so heavy you just can't operate it.

I forgot, I put my SONY FX1 on top....

Any tip on how calibrate, balance, weight.... something?Huh?

Regards

Hi there,

Cool design... you might want to test the drop time of the rig once everything is all in place. It should be a 2-3 second drop time (can start around there and fine tune later).  You can move the gimble up or down to adjust the drop time... also adding and removing weight to the top or bottom depending on where you need it.   Generally the gimble is 3-6" from the top.

How much does just the sled weigh?   Also the sled bottom should line up with the camera (pic has it turned). Might have to much distance on the bottom, unless you are flying a lot of weight.

For tips on balancing see the hbs 101 forum. Btw, i think you made the base of the sled too long. You should shorten it. It does not really have to be that long, especially a handheld rig.
