First of all you need to tell us the weight you will be flying and or max if you intend on flying anything heavier in the later on.

Canon 5D? How are you planning on monitoring what you shoot? Does it have video out to monitor? I don't know if steadicam is a good idea for a camera like that. You could fly that thing on a handheld like steadicam junior. And later if you need to get a small arm and vest. Why do you want to use a steadicam with that camera?

Hey Patrick

You could comfortably fly a 5D on something like a Merlin!!! I doubt whether a vest arm combo would even react with such a small DSLR  (plus be ecomomically an overkill)

There is also the issue of focus on moving objects with using DSLR's for video. The idea of using a DSLR is to use the tiny DOF you can set so unless you are pretty accurate as to your camera/subject distance you will lose focus fairly easily which a video camera will not do!!

Most DSLR shoots happen on a tripod so at least the camera stays put and you only have to worry about the talent..make both moveable and you have a headache. I will be impressed if any DSLR can keep focus and maintain DOF AND do it with some fancy moves on a stedicam too!!

im not planing on buying a Steadicam just for the 5d like i happen to own a 5d but i mostly shoot film and yes the 5d has a monitor output and the issue with the subject distance and the focus it will be the same thing as film as long as the space between my subject and camera does not change ill be fine.
im currently using a Arri 35mil cam that weighs about 45 lbs with the lens,  what system do you guys think will work ?

To fly a 45 pound system, especially something as big and expensive as an Arri 35mm camera (I'm assuming something in the BL series, or maybe an Arri III or II) requires a serious Steadicam, something which will cost a serious amount of money. Most Steadicams that are used by professionals to fly cameras like these are over $50,000 USD. While there are some homebuilt systems that can fly this kind of weight, and some lower-priced commercial systems (like the Glidecam Gold), probably even those will be out of your price range. Also, something to consider is that for any of these rigs, you will need to have a rig with 24v power (most 35mm camera setups need it) and good enough wiring through the post to power the camera (you really shouldn't be flying a 35mm camera with onboard batteries, and a power cord going to the rig is a big no-no). Also, most Steadicam operators will only work using Steadi-Mags, which are film magazines that displace the film vertically, instead of to one side or towards the front and back. The movement of film from one part of the magazine to another during the take is enough to upset the rig's balance!

Now, this certainly shouldn't defer you from trying to come up with a way to make your pictures steadier. For the 5DMK2, a stabilization system is certainly a quite attainable goal! And, for other cameras without all the restrictions that a big, heavy, complex, and expensive 35mm camera brings, stabilization can be a fun, exciting, truly captivating passion.

I hope some of this helps. Smiley
