Hi all,
I finally took the plunge and bought Cody's Low Budget plans, and am starting to accumulate/gather the parts I need. I was greatly impressed and inspired by seeing what Jonathan Cohn had done,.. so here we go!
I just missed getting bearings from a local sports equipment place. I'm in Canada, and I guess the stores are switching over to winter stock. Sheesh,.. it's only Auagust for crying out loud. They had just gotten rid of their bearings stock, to replace it with hockey stock. Ugh. Seems like they do that earlier every year. So it looks like, EBAY here I come!
I just have a question. Cody's Plans state to use ABEC 3 or 5 bearings. I can find ABEC 5s on EBAY easily, but can also get 7s or 9s. Is there an advantage going low number over high number? My understanding is that the higher the number, the smoother the bearing motion. Is that a bad thing for a Stabilizer system, and that's why he recommends 3s or 5s?
This is all new to me, but I am determined to give the stabilizer a go! Yeehaw! Fun, fun, fun! Thanks everybody! I'll probably be posting lots of questions over the next while, so, thanks for the help,.. and please be patient with me!

The higher the ABEC number the better the bearing. Most lower cost bearings are not rated. ABEC-3 is a good choice to start with. The best that I have seen is ABEC-9. Very few manufacturers produce ABEC-7 or 9. Some companies cannot manufacture the higher rated bearings because of the required strict tolerances, may claim that there are no significant differences between ratings. But it all depends on how you intend on using them. For your purpose Abec 3 o5 5 will do fine.

Why not search for all the parts at those places Cody described in his plans? It would be much easier.

Ummm,.. I bought the Low-Budget plans, and all I can find in it, is on pg. 7 where it says, "For the main gimbal bearing, there are many online shops if one cannot be found locally." Am I missing something?

Hey Steve,
Where do you live in Canada? I have a spare bearing the same size as the one you listed in Ebay. I have no use for it...

I am absolutely blown away David! Yes, I am in Ontario, Canada, and cannot even begin to tell you how grateful I am for the offer! I guess I will PM you as I am careful about posting personal details on message boards. Some say I am "anal" about it, but hey,..

Hey Charles, You should put up a section on this form for all the spare bits and pieces we have laying around collecting dust. The bearing was the original one for my gimbal (pictured here: http://hbsboard.com/index.php/topic,3375.0.html) but we had to redesign the gimbal post and we needed a new bearing with a larger ID. It's nice to know that the old bearing will go to a nice home with another new sled Dave
