Rod support system
« on: November 07, 2007, 01:17:07 AM »

This assembly made a cameo appearance in the post where I showed my M35 adaptor a couple of months ago. The adaptor is why I made the assembly, and the rods will also allow me to mount a follow focus at some point.

Now that we recently put this rig on a crash weight reduction diet (you know the one, where all you get fed are drill bits),  I decided to give it a starring role in its own post, complete with a CU.

The main platform is just two lengths of thick-walled aluminum tubing welded to some 8mm plate. I chose to make the small square that bolts to the bottom out of stainless steel, because I expect the screw connection there to get the most stress.

I haven't tried to fly this on my stabilizer because I'm currently rebuilding it, but I figured when the time comes, the lighter the load the better.

Looking good.  I'm planning a camera baseplate in the near future.  I hope you're going to give it a black finish.  That would look cool. Smiley

In my dreams one day everything will have a black finish. Maybe I need to organize a rig finishing party with BYOA (bring your own acid.)  Roll Eyes

Speaking of which, can the post from the Manfrotto monopod be anodized black? I ask because mine has a shiny finish that is different from the duller colored unfinished alloys I get from my supplier.

Mine is a 680B and anodized black.  It has a sheen, but not objectionable.  May have a protective coat over it.
Which one do you have?

Now that I've taken it apart I'm not sure of the model anymore, but the diameter of the main post is 29.5 mm, and it had three pieces held together by two clamps. It has a shiny chrome color.

Phil, when you say yours is anodized, did it come that way or did you have it done?

It came that way.  680B=680 Black.

Dang it! Well, when you build your rigs from bits and pieces you have lying around, I guess you can't worry too much about these things.

Actually I don't really mind the two-toned (silver and black) look my sled is acquiring, but I'd still be interested in knowing if finished aluminum can be anodized. Anyone?

It can be done, but the 680B cost 89 dollars when I bought it.  Prepping and re-anodizing might be close to that.   Smiley
