Place a sled instead of a cup and off you go. If I am not mistaken sailboats employ this system for their
stoves. So sailors can fry eggs in rough sea.

Yes Alex and as far as I remember the gimbals were used mainly to hold the compass on the ships. Watch this definition of gimbals (wordreference.com): "an appliance that allows an object (such as a ship's compass) to remain horizontal even as its support tips"
