how important is it to be able to operate by holding under the gimbal vs. above the gimbal.
I'm thinking of a hand-held design that would make it hard to operate by holding on underneath the gimbal.
Any thoughts?

Ideally you operate the rig by it's center of gravity. And that is of course just below the gimble.
