Bearings for Cody's Plan
« on: August 20, 2006, 01:48:53 PM »

I have been searching all over for the correct bearing for codys plan. I finally found it so I thought I would share the info here.

The bearng you need has the designation 1652
the ID is 1.125 OD 2.5
if you want it with sheilds you change the designation to 1652-2RS or 1652-SS

If you are looking for it on Mc Master Carr it is item # 2780T67
High-Load Steel Ball Bearing Dbl Sealed, for Shaft Dia 1-1/8" X 2-1/2" Od X 5/8" W
it will run you $22.81

I also found it on Ebay at the ebay store Bearing Bargins
http://members.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=bobhill5
Hes selling them for  10 for $29.95    2 for $9.95  or   1 for $5.95
I believe he has the shield kind as well but not the open ones

I teach film so I am trying to build a fleet of these things for my students-- so I bought a 10 pack!

I hope this info helps some one
later

Roger,

Make sure the bearing is shielded and not sealed.  There is a big difference when used in a stabilizer.

Jonathan,

You need to use a shielded bearing as it has less friction.  A sealed bearing has the plastic "sealing" material touching both the inner and outer race to protect it from harsh environments like a pump might experience.  In a shielded bearing the "shield" is connected to the outer race and comes close, but doesn't touch, the inner race.  Because of this it is far more frictionless.

I found this out when I bought a non-brand sled earlier in my career (before we made our own sled) in which the manufacturer used a sealed bearing.  I couldn't figure out why my video was suffering from side-to-side motion problems.  I thought it was my arm system and spent some time reworking the arm bearings before I finally figured out it was the sled pan bearing.  I proceeded to cut some of the plastic "shield" off of the bearing and voila...it worked great.

This is just one of the many things we learned during our manufacturing process.

To see what the difference would look like you can go to our Flash Video demo page and click on the last clip.  It is found here:

http://www.indicam.com/media/Flash/flvplayer.html

The non-gimbal video is a sled that you just hold in you hand but the movement is a lot like the problems I was having with the sealed pan bearing.  The gimballed video is done using our PILOT sled.  Since the video was done in full telephoto the movements are exaggerated.

I hope this answers you question.

Has the diameter of his tube changed? The book I have now is using a 1 1/2" carbon fiber tube.

So he is saying to use a 45mm x 58mm x 7mm bearing.

And I found a guy on Ebay who has a whole lot of the bearings for this project, including this big one.
His Ebay name is "irvineman".

And this particular bearing is number 6809ZZ for $14.99 + $7.95 shipping.
They are double shielded too.

One other source is bocabearing.com item number MR6809-ZZ for $42.99

I may be new at this game but won't the tolerances be out if your mixing metric and imperial? post vs bearing

I don't wanna be a stickler but is it irrelavent as we are talking in mm?

Does Cody's plans work for both?  or is even finding bearings in imperial a thing of the past

I'm looking for similar bearing here in Canada.  Anyone know of a supplier here?

There was an article here on this very topic. I can't remember where.   Undecided You can check the general cody forums... Maybe someone else can answer.
