Home Depot - here is a list of springs - can you tell me which will work?
« on: August 09, 2006, 02:15:12 PM »

Sorry about this long list, but I went to Home Depot and they had a bunch of Extension springs - so being dutiful I took down all of the info (in no particular order).

15/32 X 4.5 X.041
5.28 lbs  (capacity)

5/8 X 6.15 X .054
8.64 lb (capacity)

7/8 X 6 X .091

7/16 X 10-1/4 X .041
5.6 lbs  (capacity)

7/16 X 8.5 X .047
8.47 lbs  (capacity)

1/2 X 8.5 X .047
7.47 lbs  (capacity)

In the educated opinion of this board, are any of these going to be useable?  Thanks

Phase 1.
I know that Cody has specs in his book, so I am trying to find something close to those.  But since everyone here has more experience than I, I didn't want to buy springs from Home Depot that might be close, but not right.  Do you know what I am trying to say?  I guess I am just looking for confirmation...

Well, I have finally broken down and got a membership at Century Spring.  I have to wait a couple of days for it to work through the system.  I was wondering if the springs cost about $10.00 a piece?  It won't tell me prices until  Iam a member...

If there is a Lowe's hardware near you or located in your city you can find the exact springs there. But I have tried three different springs for other failed experiments. What I have found out is that the small springs you have mentioned will not work. The last set of springs I bought from Home Depot were their 95 lbs. springs.

Thanks for the info.  I did indeed go to Lowes and couldn't find the springs and even online at Lowes.com, I used the search box and couldn't find extension springs - I don't mind checking again, but a part number would be great to give the clerk.
I too am having difficulties with other kinds of springs like you mentioned - most of the time, they won't support the weight and are too small, like you said.

The number of the springs at Lowe's is CS-259. They come two to a pack. But like I mentioned about the Home Depot springs get the 90+lbs. springs. If you use those you will need to adjust for the larger spring diameter. Smiley

Good luck.

I phoned Lowes and they do not have a spring number CS-259 and it does not come up on the web, so I really don't know what to think now...in fact, on the web when I type in Springs at Lowes, it does not yield any results...

Me (again).
Does anyone have the SPRING package from Lowes to get the model number?  As you can see from my last post, when I phone 2 locations (I tried again), both as unfamiliar with the CS-259 number...it has been getting close to three years since I started this, I guess it was about time I finished, huh?

Well if the Lowe's nearest you does not carry them you should get them from Century Springs web site.

Good Luck.

Try ACE hardware instead of lowes. Lowes doesnt carry them anymore.

ACE carries a large number of Century Springs here is a link to the C-259. I think these are the ones this thread was recomending,  though they dont seem to match ones cody recomends in his book.

http://www.acehardwaresuperstore.com/extension-spring-steel-p-44375.html?sort=3a&page=5

they are much cheaper than buying them directly from century. When I was pricing them century wanted $11 bucks for each spring!

I bought some springs that I am going to try out from the local tractor supply store.  But If they dont work I am ordering from ACE.

Good Luck with the springs
