Thought I'd share this with you. I'm shooting a project in a few months with a Sony HVR-Z1U, which I do not own. So, instead of practicing in the dark with some irrelevant camera, I decided to build this dummy.
I call it the Uncamera. It's the same length as the Z1, weighs about the same (a little more), and has its mounting plate and center of gravity located in the same positions as the Z1. I added a laser pointer to the front end, so I can practice with the cross and not have a camera. I may rig my sled with two mirrors positioned in such a way that I can look down to where the monitor would be, and see the cross on the wall. But that may be too much. There's no way to run a video feed out of that laser pointer. I checked.
When it's upside-down (third pic), it unintentionally looks like a tank. A wooden tank with yellow wheels.

Alan, Your top stage looks nice. Even upside down! I think you will see at the workshop that you really do need a camera though.

No, I don't. (These do the down-conversion on the fly.) But I dare you to call 16x9 Inc and ask them that exact question.
