I just simply got rid of the lower rotating section--there is still plenty of length to the post.

Yes if i use the manfrotto 680 that is the best option, because it has 4 parts but the manfrotto 681 has only 3 section (whih is similar to the manfrotto 679 but with bigger diameters), so it is not possible to get rid of the lowest part, because then there are only two left - one for the gimbal section and one for the main post and then there would be nothing to extend. The 681 has more length in all itīs section than the 680, because it has only three parts (thatīs why i want to use it). But is it a no no if the lowest section can rotate when you extend it? Would it be better to use the monopod 680? Has anyone used the monopod manfrotto 681 to build a stabilizer?
