NEW CONTEST STARTS 2/20/06
« on: February 17, 2006, 05:31:57 PM »

Alright guys....

I am willing to build someone a tilting top-stage for the person who presents the best 5 minute film/reel demonstrating their rig/jib/stabilizer.

Others who want to beef up the prize and add something to it...feel free to do so.

Submit entries in attachments to your posts in this thread, along with pictures of the equipment used. If your file is larger than the limit, and alternative mailbox can be used.

Contest (tentatively) ends March 30th.

The film that best illustrates what HBS is about wins...

What'ta guys think? Cool? Y'all in?

I'm in! Thanks for the film/reel part. This allows for people to make a short film using the equipment or a slick demo reel or what ever else... so long as it best illustrates what HBS is about.

Nice Wade.

I will add a $25 gift certificate to B & H.

Members only I think. You have to be a member to post anyway right?

Wade, I say you just leave it as you stated in your first post, no more no less. I think that if you start getting too much input from everybody this will drag on as a thread and never actually happen. I say that the fine tuning should be done in round two if needed.

So come on people. You all know that you need to make that short film or demo reel anyway.  Wink

Pot is a $25 gift cert at B & H and a tilting top-stage so far.

People have until 2/20/06 to join correct Wade?

Let's make it the end of the month, the 28th. It'll give us a chance to get some more in the pot...

Wade, do you need any judges? If so, count me in for that. I'm definetly up for judging some stabilizer videos. If not, I'm sure I'd enjoy entering. I've got some cool clips that showcase my old rigs.

My rig may not  have been the best, but I got some good clips anyways. I'd personally prefer to be the judge though.

Oh, and Wade, maybe you should talk to Charles about instead of having your own contest, partnering up with Charles for his contest. Maybe have your prizes up the ante for his trivia contest instead of having your own contest? Or maybe keep the video ideas, but include it as part of the same contest.

Also, will there be rules for different levels of rigs? Obviously not all of us are working on the same level of rig.

EDIT: Thinking about it, maybe this should be kept into one contest, based on trivia. Really, although some of us have professional level rigs, plenty of people on here are using prosumer or consumer level rigs which wouldn't hold a candle to the few professional rigs. I just think this might cause some issues, and for this reason I'd be skittish about a videos contest. What do you all think? I think Charles's Trivia contest is a good idea, and adding prizes to that can only make things even better. In my opinion, I think that would be the best option.

Wade. I didn't want to start posting suggestions, but I have to say that I think the judges should be the participants only.

Why would you guys want to just judge? Joe, why wouldn't you submit something?

We will ALL be the judge...

When the contest ends, we will take a poll. Anyone who submits, or not, as long as they are an HBS member, can vote for one submission.

I plan on submitting, even though I am donating one of the prizes, just for the sake of having fun making my reel. This way, with everyone voting, anyone who wants to, even if they have voted, can have a submission in the running also. Plus, it allows for anyone to judge...from the beginner to the expert.

My intention is to combine this with Charles' potential contest.

And as originally stated, the contest is to see if people can make a film that best describes what HBS is about. This doesn't mean you have to have the best engineered rig, or the best experience in shooting movies, or whatever. This means that you can use whatever means you can to tell people, depict to people, inspire people on what you have felt here at HBS and what HBS has done for you. You don't have to demonstrate your rig (though it is invited), you don't have to demonstrate your expertise (though this is also invited)... you just need to use whatever means you can to fulfill the overall principle  MAKE A FILM THAT BEST DEPICTS WHAT HBS IS ALL ABOUT.  For example, you may have a garage littered with pieces of scrap metal, metal shavings, fast-food wrappers scattered about, drawings and plans posted on your wall.... you can do a month-long video journal of your quest to build this certain part for your rig...all withuot showing the rig. Pics of the tools used for your reel are just bonus points you can earn, so to speak. For someone that doesn't have a rig/jib/dolly, but has the ability and desire to edit something together into an entertaining piece, this is also a perfect opportunity.

So really, Tom, and others, don't sit back and wait to judge..... hop in and use the skills you have and make a submission.

Right now, there will only be one winner, but if more people pitch in to the pot, there will possibly be runner-up prizes too.

Job, Tom, everyone, submit something...... and be a judge!

Remember, this isn't about the bling-bling rig you've spent a hundred years slaving over.... this is about what HBS is about... the experience of making it.

Onward and forward!
