Ok, so I purchased a 7 inch under $100 monitor - it is 12v DC. I have a rechargeable battery from a 1,000,000 CF flashlight that I am going to use to power it. So the question is : How do I run the monitor to the battery? The monitor is the female end of the 12v DC cord (whose opposite end is supposed to go to the lighter in the car). Do I need to cut the lighter-in-the-car part up and splice and dice? How do I hook that up to the 12V battery? ALot to ask, but if someone has a tutorial, that would be great!!

If not wanting to 'dice n splice' you could go to an Auto shop and get a cigar lighter socket (maybe a twin one) that has pigtail leads (no connectors) then whatever connectors that are needed for your battery end.

Okay, here's how I did it with my previous rig: First, go to Radioshack. In there with car power adapters should be a female cigarette lighter socket to 2 clips. (I can grab the item number if you need clarification) Just hook that up to the battery terminals, and then plug the monitor power plug into it. All is good.

If you go 12v to 12v no problem. But you must be sure that you do not cross positive and negative--then you will smoke the monitor. You can't just pick a wire and connect it to the nearest terminal.. they should all be marked plus and negative. If not check with a meter.

David, did you pull the flashlight battery out of a unit, or did you purchase it separately? I have one of those insanely bright flashlights, I'm wondering if it's the same thing that you have.

I pulled it out of a unit. It has a input for the charge that came out with the battery, so it was a great find. Now all I have to do is plug in the charger to the unit plug and it will recharge.

Sounds great. We'd love to see a photo when it's done, if you don't mind.

Absolutely I will. Without hbs, I wouldn't even be making a steadicam and without Charles, this wouldn't have come as far as it has!
