Women are from Venus, men are from HBS?
« on: January 30, 2006, 12:18:08 PM »

Curious observation:  The communications that have been flowing amongst HBSers seems to have been mainly from men.

Is it that men are more do-it-yourselfers than women?  Do men know more about tools and tooling?  Are men more creative when it comes to DIY projects?

Home built stabilizer rigs don't necessarily have to be heavy, so carrying the HBS weight should not be a problem.

What do you HBSers think?

Women speak up -- if you're there.  Are you just listening on HBS?

I think this is a place like my cigar store.

A bunch of guys conversing about guy stuff.

Girls are allowed, but they mostly don’t come.

You probably didn’t expect this soap box speech, but I was just thinking about this topic. This is not meant to be confrontational or directed at anybody specific. Just me rambling and giving my two cents.

I think that this fact is a combination of inherent differences between each sex blended with the way in which a society helps to fit people into a mold of a given sex. Go to a toy store and look at the differences between the girls section and the boy section (clothes and toys). This has to play some part in how a child sees their own role in society (I'm speaking of the USA). At the same time, I feel that men and women or inherently different. I have one son and one daughter. I have encouraged my daughter to play with what most would consider to be boy toys. Still she tends to gravitate toward Barbie and baby dolls. For my son, I have attempted to allow the same freedom. If he is playing with one of his sister's Barbie dolls, I don't cringe and quickly replace it with a Truck. He has become the self pronounced owner of his sister’s pink blanket in fact. Though this is true, he tends to be drawn more toward dirt, water, toy cars, and blocks.

So, to sum it up: I think that in general men and women are different. At the same time however (and I believe that the Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus book mentions this), I also know that not all men or women fit into a given stereotype.

I spent 4 years in the navy and 2 years as a fire fighter. Both jobs are mostly occupied by men. Now I am a stay-at-home and my wife is a pediatrician... go figure. We saw this as the best option for our children. Though I may be doing a job that is commonly done by women, I am still a man. I am not Mr. Mom, I am a dad.

The great part about all of this is that none of it really matters. What matters is that every person be treated with respect and compassion regardless of how they came to fit, or not fit, within a given stereotype.

People are like tea. There are 1,000's of different combinations and flavors. Yet, each requires one common ingredient, water. In the case of people that ingredient is love.

From my experience, the female side of humans tend to be 'practical' whilst males not so much.

I read once that women are higher on the evolutionary scale then us knuckle dragging HBS builders.  That would explain why they look at us and mutter " Men!!"  Gotta love their common sense. Grin

An X of mine maintains that men are driven to create because we can’t make babies. She is the mother of my daughter and actually one of the most intelligent people I have ever had the pleasure to meet.

I probably wouldn’t tell her that though

I'm pretty sure that I can make babies, I just can't seen to give birth to them.   Wink

Seriously though, your X's claim makes some sense I think.

There is a lady who has been on the old forum. She has a forum, forgot the name, that caters to homebuilt stuff. Trust me she's got some knock out design thst she has done for her movie making productions. Damn! I forgot her name. She has a tutorial in the tips section of the website on how to built a anchor support for a car. I'll have to look to see if I still have her links.

I've been raising my son since he was born.  The mother left shortly after childbirth.  I've had to listen to comments from women about how men can't raise kids like a women and how they are inferior and blah, blah, blah.  I've met females who are extraordinary mothers and I've met females who have no motherly instinct whatsoever.  I liked boy toys when I was a kid, but I also played barbies with my sister.  I've always liked to sew and I can do dishes and laundry.  I also like to build and tinker.  If I were a women would I be interested in the same things?  I don't know.  Are we that much different?  Men are also more apt to jump at the chance to show off for a woman, sometimes robbing her of the experience of actually doing a task herself.  I've known girls that do their own tune-ups, and I've known some that would never think of such a thing.  Stabilizer rig builders?  Well, I haven't seen any of those yet.  In college the animation department was 85% guys when I started.  By the end it was about 75%.  Perhaps today it has balanced out as more females become interested.  Maybe in time we will see more women building rigs.  The role of women is changing dramatically in the world.  They've lived through countless centuries of oppression and are slowly being freed.  In due time, they're going to be doing things we never thought possible.

Trevor, I like your sense of humor.  Sometimes, my wife doesn't understand my goals, vision, etc., so she doesn't understand why I spend money on things, toys.  Wait 'till I actually get Jon's special-order gimbal in the mail:  "What are you going to do with this? ... How much was it?!!  Okay Shocked"  (You know, the okay that says I should not have bought it.)

When I finally get my rig built (gimbal and all), I'll be able to produce a video that used it and then I'll say to her, see, isn't that a steadi shot.  Aren't you glad I built this rig to be able to do that?

Brad, how much did this shot cost you?

Oh, well. Undecided

My wife suggested I should post this, as shopping we have noticed a trend by the fairer sex, we have affectionaly named it... 'Space Time Continuum'

Women tend to stop in the narrow spots,
Continually trying to occupy the same space as me, at the same time.
Next time you go out take note... it's real, must be taught at school or somewhere.
If there is a space that can be occupied that would create maximum disruption, YOU STOP THERE... and talk. Smiley Wink

She that must be obeyed has said enough....................
