Home made LED Ringlight
« on: January 27, 2006, 09:40:32 AM »

Parts I used:

1 aluminium 1 mm flat ring
2 aluminium flat bars, bend to fit the in and outside ring.
1 matt piece of plastic glass for making the light softer.
1 60 cm flexible LED string bought at the local car tuning shop.
1 4 pin XLR connector

And I haven't made a mounting bracket yet, I used gaffer tape, but I will make a bracket!!

Good Job,

What is a car tuning shop?

and can you get those LEDs in different temperutures (colors)?

At car Tuning shop you can get stuff to pimp your ride, bumper kits, make it faster or build lights in or out on the car.
These LEDS are one colortemperuture (white) and I don't know (maybe somone on the board) if it is possible to regulate LEDS.

It is a Silicon string from 60 cm (3x20 cm) with 60 Ultra Bright LEDS.

If you build your own with individual LED's like in the "DiY Retroreflective Green/Bluescreen " thread, you could build a few different circuits to shut off a bank or two of LED's to regulate light output. I'm sure you can regulate it with a POT, but i experienced some flickering as it got dimmer in a commercial ring light. same with mini flo's I was using, though flourescents and led's are completely different. There's a point where they they aren't happy and start flickering.

To regulate LED:s you should use a pwm circuit.  If just bringing down the current to the diods they change in color temperature and the dimming is not even near linear.

a pwm circuit turn the leds on and of fast(read KHz). and the on/off relation can be set by a pot.. This gives no change in color temperature, no flickering if the speed of the pwm is high enough. and the regulation is linear.

Pulse Width Modulation, that's the way you controll brush type DC motors as well. Very Accurate.

And it doesn't waste all power in a resistor..

Nice job, Hans!

How'a the image?  I've rerad ton of leds specs and find no (regular) leds that could give a good white and give the same temperatur to the entire iluminated surface.
But the numbers are just numbers. So, are you satisfied with the image?
