Server woes
« on: January 25, 2006, 05:08:47 PM »

I guess Murphy's law is alive and well. I suppose many of you tried to login to the board today just to see a big white page of SQL errors. Well, we upgraded our PHP module on the server this morning to v4.4.2 and suddenly every PHP site I host a with a SQL db could no longer talk to each other. After pouring through mountains of code to find the culprit we isolated it to a single ampersand ("&") in one little script. Out of 80,000 lines of code that make a board like this work it can all come to a screeching halt with a single misplaced "&". Oh well, that's enough of a fire drill for one day.

Sorry for the down time. Send me a PM if any you happen to notice any other problems.

Thanks for letting me know...I thought it was my modem.

when I logged on to the site a few days ago, it had a notice that it will be down for upgrading.  I believe it was for Sunday...Did this happen?

If so, I never saw it.

I get

Code:
Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

Pushing reload a couple of times works..

Does it work after the few reload cycles? If so, then it's your cache. Just viewing it a few times should help it here.

Caching, although a great technology, definetly has big downsides in some situations.

I've run into problems with that pesky ampersand guy many times working with PHP.  I feel for you, Kevin.  I still work on older versions and am dreading the day clients start calling wondering why there db's are down.

I get it every now and then. A few refreshes later, it's back up.
