Crab Dolly
« on: February 23, 2005, 09:59:00 PM »

Hello folks.  I haven't visited in a while, but I have a few questions.  Did anyone attempted to build a crab dolly?  Is it easy as say, 3 swivel pneumatic wheels in a triangle formation, with a tripod or camera mount attached?  I've watched some of the old classic movies and it seems that they used the crab dolly in many tight areas - moving in and out, left and right, back and front.

This question might be for the folks in the crane section but in any case, has anyone build a contraption that moves up and down, sort of like a crane but has 3 or 4 stops before reaching its peak height.  I've seen this connected to a crab dolly.  Any comments/help will be appreciated.

What you are talking about is the old school Moviola dollies.  The nuematic jib has been shrunk and used on the current fischers and Pewees.

I can get a ton of photos of the Moviola if you are interested.

I can post photos of an old 40's 50's Moviola Dolly, its a beast.  I know a place that has like 4 of them in storage, no not for sale or use.  They are parts dollies.

Not a gear head, this is a studio dolly with crab capabilities, and a nuematic boom.  This sucker weighs a ton.

If you wantt photos of gear heads, I can post a Warbol in a month or less.

I've got a moviola dolly. It's heavy but it rolls nice.
I'm going to use it as a crane base.
