Plans for a gyro stabilised mount?
« on: January 17, 2006, 08:27:42 AM »

Hi there. Has anyone attempted to build a small gyro stabilised mount for a DV cam. I thinking of having a go at it, but it is hard to find info. It would be like a mini Continental side mount as used on helicopters etc, but could be adapted to fit vehicles as well.

Thanks   Petr.

You could look at the KS6 gyro's. they make them for still cameras, and use two for steadicams. I forgot how fast it spins. i think i remember reading that its at least 20k rpm?

faster spin equals less mass.

also gotta keep in mind that if your spinning something that fast. it's a good idea to encase it very well. if something let's loose, your gonna be in trouble if it comes flying out of the case. Smiley

Is that a kenlab gyro?  Anybody have any suggestions for where to buy gyros?

Thanks guys. I have worked with real gyros on Continental side mounts fitted to helicopters, and with a Wes-cam (it was worth more than the helicopter!) and also hand held 16mm using one Kenyon gyro (worked not bad)

Just wondered if anyone has attempted making a small one at home using there own home built gyros.

BTW the full size one's spin very fast and it takes several minutes to get them up to speed, as well as to slow down once turned off.

Petr,

Would you mind showing what goes on inside that football (american) shaped case?

I don’t think there’s anything to tough about building a decent gyro,  I would opt for very  high end bearings (ABEC 7s or 9s), and a little oversized as well.  Next I would probably use brushless DC motors, they are very quiet and can spin at very high RPMs depending on the winding, the voltage, and the controller frequency.
