Topic: Got some springs, but I don't think they are right - pls help! (Read 1398 times)

Well, I ordered a bunch of springs from Fastenal (only $1.70 each), but I guess you get what you pay for. I gave the gentleman exact measurements on the phone of the extension springs I wanted (right from Cody's book), but instead I got :
4 - 4 1/4 inch in length (from eyehole to eyehole) springs, that have a diameter of about 3/16 in diameter AND the eyeholes are way too small to work.
4 - 6 inch in length (from eyehole to eyehole) springs, same diameter.
What I wanted was : four - .75 X 4.5 X .085 and four - .75 X 4.5 X .093
So here is the question :If I put something else into the eyeholes (like a Figure '8') to make it attach to the bolts in the bones (as I said the eyeholes on the spring at too small to fit over the bolt), will this work with the calculations in Cody's book?
The springs are really small compared to the ones I have seen on the site, so I am guessing it won't work but I haven't tried it yet. Any ideas?

I'd just go with Century Springs, as their springs are always quite nice, and their ordering system uses product numbers, so no real chance of them giving you bad springs there. I'm pretty sure Cody's book recommends Century springs too.
Not sure about the idea of adding stuff to the springs. I think just getting new springs would be the easiest solution. Plus, springs are cheap if you buy them straight from Century.

I didn't see part nuymbers in the guide for Century springs...do you have them handy?
I have the springs from Fastenal anyway so I am going to try those before I attempt to take them back.

A good spring, based on Cody's designs and suggestions, would be the century spring number c-259. On the century website, omit the c and dash when searching for the spring. Your dimensions should be 13/16 x 4 x .120 (diam. x length end to end x wire gauge), or in metric terms 20.650 x 101.6 x 3.048.
If you live in N. America and have a Lowe's hardware store close to you, they have that in stock and you can save yourself shipping charges by going there.
If you are building Cody's 3-A iso arm, this is the spring.

80874 or 80874S and 80883 or 80883S
Those all will work. The "S" versions seem to be slightly higher capacity.

I am using Cody's old design plans - I am going to look for a Lowes in the US - is the Lowe's springs only for the 3A arm?

Does Lowes carry springs that will work with both versions of Cody's plan for the arm? The older and the new 3a?
