Barely Steadicam-related: tonight I saw a great documentary about the cinematographer Haskell Wexler. He DP'd on the film Bound for Glory, where the Steadicam was first used. He also did Blaze, which I believe is noted for its Steadicam work, but it's been ages since I've seen it.
There is Hardly a mention of Garrett or the Steadicam in Tell Them Who You Are, but it's fascinating nonetheless, very humorous and also moving. Recommended!

Fortunatly groups like this one (HBS) will keep alive the identity of the inventer of the stabalizer, it's one of those things, I don't know who invented most of the film equipment, but mention stabalizer/steadicam and the world knows Garrett Brown. Hell, ain't it great

Is this out on DVD? Wexler is a truly interesting figure--had a commercial company with Conrad Hall and photographed many fine films. He did one of the first helicopter shots hanging from a rope, tied to a 2x4 that he sat on , and holding a Cinemascope camera for Picnic. There aren't any more of these guys.

I saw it in a local theater, but it looks like it is out for rental. It's funny, when you learn about someone, and then their name seems to pop up everywhere. I hadn't heard of him before, but he's clearly been very influential.

If you want to see something remarkable, find The Molly Mcquires. It is on Paramount DVD of 10 bucks. It was photographed by James Wong Howe. He began in silents as , I believe, Mary Pickford's cameraman and had a long and distinctive career. He always went for new things. Mollys is one of the most beautifully realized color films you will ever see. Totally tuned to the story. Oh yeah, stars Sean Connery and Richard Harris. Too bad they couldn't have got some good actors.
