MagiqCam Series 3P
« on: October 02, 2005, 11:04:29 AM »

Hi There

I recently purchased the MagiqCam Series 3P. The communication I had with Animagique leading up to my purchase was amazing but once I had placed and payed for my order communication was very hard indeed.

As I'm not an experianced Stabilizer user - this is my first adventure - I found that the documentation that came with the MagiqCam 3P is very very poor. Their are now illustrations and what photo's are they are of little help with problem solving or trying to figure out what the text is talking about.

Can anyone suggest any books on the subject that could help me get on my way as at the moment I'm flying blind and have no idea if I'm doing things right or wrong.

I still don't understand the whole drop time thing. When I drop the sled it shoots down and swings over, which can't be good.

Thanks
Rory

I assume your rig has an adjustable gimbal--that will allow you to find the CG of the sled by sliding it up or down on the post.  Just put it on the balancing stand,  hold it horizontal to the ground, and  slide the gimbal until the sled stays horizontal.  Then
slide the gimbal up about 1/2 inch or so.  Then check the drop time and you should see a big difference from what you are experiencing now.  I don't know of any books that deal with setting up a rig, but there are some video tutorials at the Varizoom site and, if you can find it, there is the great EFP training tape. Yeah I thought they was only a 2p too,  but its refered to in the paper work that came with the rig as the "MagiqCam Series 3P Camera Stabilization System from Animagique"

I think they must have typed it out wrong.....
Again another point to show how bad the documentation is that the rig comes with :-(

Thanks

Hey Rory,

How do you like your 3P? I've been playing with it for a few days now...nice equipment. I can see why the workshops cost $2K.

Hi Charles,

I can be wrong. But just as Rory mention...I think it would be the 2P version. Just on the instruction is mention 3P throughout.

Hi there

I've been using my Maqicam for a few weeks now and am really enjoying working with a stabilizer. This is my first ever attempt at it so every thing is new and I have nothing to compare it too.

I'm shooting with my DVX and RedrockMicro35mm adaptor, mainly a rapper walking through the streets of London.

Does anyone know if the Maqicam would be able to take a Panasonic Varicam camera?

The DVX+Redrock make the camera much ever than a normal DV camera by itself, I'm hoping that weighs about the same a Varicam as I'd like to shoot some high def footage with this rig.

Many thanks

The only way anyone is going to know (as to the carrying capacity of the rig) is if YOU, or someone else, loads the rig up with weight to find the top limit.

Look for 'twist' in the arm, or if the gimbal arm gets too strained (magiqcam has a habit of the gimbal fork riding on an angle best of times)

It's these types of data that is needed.

Maybe a 'shot' of what you have running at the moment would be good...

Trevor.

Based on Ed's rig, i would guess that it could not support a Varicam.

Hey Rory,

We are using the JVC HD100/ Micro35 with Nikon Cine geared lenses / Magiqcam IIP/ Aladdin wireless follow focus/ and the Marshall 7"HD monitor...and we have hit over the 20lbs. We are stripping down the camera and gears to get it under the weight. I don't know what exactly your setup is, but has your's been push to the limit yet?

May I ask what is showing up as 'overweight'.
we have run 15lb on the 11a series (from time to time) and this tends to show up as excesive twist in the arm. I would not have thought this to be an issue with the IIp
