gimbal "split" question
« on: January 04, 2005, 08:39:00 PM »

i have a question about cody's first gimbal design.

It's clear that gimbal has to be movable through the sled, and hand should be able to move the sled just under the main bearing.

According to cody's plans if i build the gimbal and i suppose to mount a grip below the bearing, i cannot slide the gimbal.

In this case i should rotate the gimbal tube upside down and use it as a hand-grip, but the bearing is now free to fall....

some suggestion?

thanx

The idea of the design was never to have a grip below the bearing.  The fingers rotate the post directly.  One might be able to mount a foam grip under the bearing that can easily slide up and down with the gimbal.  Otherwise, the gimbal would have to be entirely redesigned and would probably take it out of the realm of off-the-shelf building and into the world of machining.

thank you cody,

my question could be stupid...

i don't want to change the plan's design, so i think that if i'd decide to change gimbal orientation, i will mount a little collar or sieger under the bearing.

if I had the possibility i would build your new gimbal, but it needs little precision machining to realize it.

Your question is not stupid.  For what reason are you wanting to place something under the main bearing?

because the bearing stays on site thanx to the sled weight.

but if i rotate the little section of the manfrotto tube upside down (suppose that you want to attack a grip sponge on it)the bearing, an so the collar and handle are not safely fixed on the sled.

(exscuse me, but i have some difficulties in translating my bad thoughts to english from italian  :)

if you look here:

http://www.3dzenotech.com/stabilizer.html

you will notice a bike sponge grip (actually removed) that is in a right position but the gimbal cannot move up or down.

Okay, I understand.  If I think of anything, I will let you know.  And if you think of anything, you can let me know.  Your sled looks great!
