Using old 12v batteries from cordless drills
« on: August 30, 2005, 11:32:31 AM »

I have noticed that some people are using this method for their battery.  Is there a benefit to this?  Is it just a cost issue?

I use one on my sled.  I did it for 2 reasons.  They are readily available and they are lighter than lead acid.  Plus, I just like the look. Smiley

Phil, thanks for the response.  What kind of mod. did you have to do to it?

Nothing more than taking an old drill and cutting off the section with the battery mount.  A bit of wiring and devising a mount for the sled.    I prefer Ridgid drill batteries--got an old drill of E-Bay to chop up.   But there are a lot of others out there that will work.

I am not electrician, but I can wire if my memory serves me from my grade 9 electricity class in highschool!  Is it pretty simple wiring?  If I can put in a ceiling fan, should I be able to wire this?

Very simple--the battery mount is marked positive and negative so it is real hard to mess it up.  Just be careful of the polarity when wiring to the monitor.  You can smoke it, so double check each with a meter. Wink

Do you run the monitor and the camera from the same battery?  Or is that just a pipe dream...?

I use it just for the monitor.  Don't see the need for anything more right now.  My camera batteries are fine.

Hey Phil,

How do you recharge the battery after you have taken it all apart?

Most of those drill batteries either have chargers that plug into the batteries themselves, or they will undock from the disassembled drill, and dock into a specialized charger.

I of course went the cheapo way, and used 2 6v alkaline lantern batteries, but I don't think that's a good thing to recommend for anyone doing a high quality rig. I'm eventually going to replace them with a SLA battery, but I'm just feeling cheap at the moment. Wink

Not sure what you mean--I reassembled the handle portion that has the battery mount and just pop the battery  out and place it in the charger when needed.

I guess I am going to have to break one up to really see what is going on - do you have a close up picture of your rig with the battery Phil or Tom?

If you go to the Sled forum, you will find New Sled--fifth topic down--that has pics of my newest upgrades  that might help you. Smiley
If not, let me know and I will take some for you as I will be doing another upgrade this weekend.

Great looking Rig Phil, very impressive.  I see how you have done it, but I don't see where the wires come out - so I guess I will have to buy a cordless screwdriver or something similiar and take it apart.
Another question, is the 12V battery ok with the LCD monitor?  Did you need to use something to step down the voltage on it?

The monitor is 12v so no step down was necessary.  The wires go directly to the battery mount and then into a harness that goes to the monitor., contained in the base.  The harness was off a SLA battery pack that was an additional purchase for that monitor, both of which I got off E-Bay.  The brand is Starvision and they are intended to be used in cars and vans.  There still are probably some on E-Bay.
