Topic: Manfrotto 679 A or B ~ welding anodized alum question (Read 382 times)

I purchased the 679-B Manfrotto/Bogen monopod. (The "B" stands for anodized black.) The person that I have lined up to weld the pole is not very experienced with aluminum welding and has suggested that the anodizing might interfear with the quality of the weld. I would just take the monopod back to where I purchased it to exchange for an non anodized ( 697-A version ) but the puppy chewed up the box. So.. here I am , asking opinions as to whether the quality of the aluminum weld should be a concern. I imagine that the anodizing can be scraped off and a sufficient weld can be made. Any thoughts or opinions ?
P.s. The welder in question is my brother... so no disparaging comments please :-)

i had to sand the annodizing off. just take a wire brush to it and you'll be fine.

You could use shaft collars to attach the post to the stage and base if you wanted to avoid using welds. I do not know much about welding aluminum. The guy who did my first rig was known for being able to weld aluminum cans together.

By all means, use collars over welding. That way if you want to upgrade the stage or base it is a simple matter of disconnecting them. Welding is permanent.
