Topic: 1652 ( pan bearing ) question (Read 410 times)

Hi,
I am wondering which version of the pan bearing ( used in the gimble ) is preferable. I purchased a version of the 1652 bearing that has a black seal that creates a fair amount of friction. I am told in a more demanding application it would "break in" and therefore have less resistance. I could have chosen the 1652-zz which does not have the black rubber seal and therefore is more free to spin. The question is, what, if any friction is desirable ?
Thanks,
Jake
p.s. I am just accumulating the materials at this point.

the skf bearing i have doesn't have any rubber things on it. but it is sealed and fairly frictionless. i prefer to have as little friction as possible so you can pan super quick if you need it and it'll isolate movements from the arm better.

It's a personal preference. If you plan on doing whip pans, like Wing mentioned, you'll want very low friction. I don't ever plan on doing fast pans, so mine probably has more friction than his.
Think about your shooting style and purchase accordingly.

thanks for the suggestions ! I think I'll use the bearing I have initially then either remove the black rubber seal or buy the 1652-zz pan bearing and compare "back to back".
cheers,
Jake
