HBS members benefit from Stabilizer manufacturers.  Where would we be if we didn't have cool rigs to study, reverse engineer, and gank ideas from?

It goes both ways but the difference is Cody we are upfront about it. Those companies will not like to tell the people that they also got inspired by looking at a bunch of geeks now do they?? Roll Eyes Wink

Regardless my statement still stands.

It is a 2 way street--we all borrow from each other.  Back in the late 70's, Panavision basically stole Garrett Brown's idea and came out with the Panaglide.  It took years, but they were eventually compelled to pay royalties and the Panaglides ended up being cut up and scrapped.  Even the big guys borrow.

If there wasn't any money in the world and if ideas weren't so coveted I think the human race would be in a lot better shape.  Fight the power, Charles.

In truth, HBS is about sharing ideas and trying new things.  I don't know how many times I have stopped my rig and looked at it anew based on members comments--Charles, Cody, David and many others are a  fountain of info.  But, as Cody said, when money enters the  picture, things can get ugly.  That, unfortunately, is the nature of business.  There are now a lot of stabilizer manufactures competing for the same dollars.  I think it is interesting that the inventor--Mr. Brown--has made very nice comments to Charles about the site and is also generous with sharing his knowledge at workshops.  Being first gives him a certain cache.  Being a good human being makes him a giant.  I suspect--with him at least--money was not the issue.  I doubt that any of us expect to get rich off our rigs--just the satisfaction of the work and a nice working rig. ....  But damn!!  I sure like that BungeeBun idea!  Had to give it back to Wade, though.  He's got it figured out. Agree with all but as I said, it would be nice to get a little 'shout out' from those companies. It's called being curtious. That's all I've been trying to say. Just to show that there are people here who are just as tanlented as the big boys.

Regardless if it's a two way street or not, I will always give respect where it is dued. Again, it is a curtious thing with me. Smiley Garret Brown knew the outcome but he is still respected for his work. There can be hundreds of different inventions propping up due to just one but the fact remains, it's the person behind the work that can still be acredited.

Very good point--Respect.  There is little of that in the world, that's for sure.

With all due respect gentlemen, although I have not been a member for very long, it seems we all develop our rigs pretty much the same way, T&E or by what we see on other rigs. I don't want to sound like the devil's advocate but we do use these for profit in some shape form or fashion. Either we do a paying gig for commercial clients, weddings, music videos, etc. or we use them as an eye catcher for when promoting our businesses or to make ourselves look the part of a professional videographers. Since I have been a member of the forum I have used ideas from other builders, manufacturers, as well as ideas I have thought of on my own, after a good nap though Wink. I just seem to think clearer after my brain has time to rest, I guess it helps my brain to digest the material easier. But hey it is just a thought. But as the original thought of the beginning of this thread Charles brought up

Quote
Boy! am I seeing alot of new and refurbish commercial stabilizers using design features that have been created by lots of members in this group.
I have seen one in particular but out of respect I won't mention that company's name. Angry

I was talking to Cody ealier on and he said something that would make companies big and small give credit where credit is dued. That one method would be to come on this board and post something to the effect of: 'Hi all. Chris here. I work for the Glidecam company and would like to personally thank those whose ideas that we used to incoporate into our design. I know it's not much of a gratitude but we like you to know that  your ideas where genuine and usable to our liking. Keep designing.'

Now something to that effect would suffice as we all know that its the joy of building and accomplishing our goals that makes this group strive. Smiley You all a damn fine lot, as the british would say. Wink I think a remark like this would put a smile on all of out faces. I know it would for me. Smiley Smiley Grin Grin Grin

Just thought I'll add Cody's interesting suggestion. That Cody is a thinker Grin
