Cody's jib ?!?
« on: May 19, 2004, 04:37:00 PM »

Cody,

I just saw the demo video of your jib on the video clips section.  Very impressing!

Are you planning to sell plans for this thing? If so, I would definitely take one!

You're in luck.  I've had plans for that thing floating around this website for quite some time.  There is a post in this very forum entitled THANKS that has the links, and there are a couple other posts dedicated to more detailed info and suggestions regarding the electronics, so you might want to browse through them before attempting to build.  But try this one, I think it is the right one:

Wow Cody!

You're a genious! You should sell theses plans as well! I can't wait to build one! But one thing at a time, the stabilizer rig first.  And I have a short to edit too!

I saw that the difference between plans1 and plan2 is that plans1 use electronic speed controllers and the second, not.  So the plan2 have a fixed speed?

Thanks again, this is a really great work!

The first version is a detailed description of exactly how my remote head is built.  The second one is a theoretical improvement which rids of the expensive speed controllers and also uses ground controllers instead of aerial ones.  I have not tried it personally to see if it works, but if you dig up the old topic, which is somewhere in this forum, someone did indeed use the second version with success.  There is also a big discussion on the use of air and ground controls and the safety issues involved.  I'm glad you liked them.  They were a giveaway to show my support for this website and also to let people know that I am not a greedy and unsharing person simply because I sell plans on building a stabilizer rig.

Good luck on your building.  i hope to see your pics in the galleries soon.

How long does your jib extend. The one I use now is about 7 1/2' from the fulcrum, but it is kind of rickety. Also, about how much weight at the end can it support?

Mine is about 9 feet from the fulcrum.  It doesn't do too well in wind.  I've actually been considering reinforcing the entire jib because of all the wind we've been having here in Reno.  It just won't stop.

I really don't know how much weight it can support - I would guess 15-20 pounds safely. I really love my jib except when it's windy.  And the other day I went to a location 100 miles away, shot for 3 hours, and broke out the jib for one final much needed shot, and I realized I left my dumbbell weights back at home!!!  One guy jumped on the back end and another actor got underneath the front while I manned the remote control, and between the three of us, we got a useable shot.

Wow, that's pretty amazing. I'm glad you were able to get a useable shot. Well I agree that your jib is pretty amazing, and I'm also glad the plans are around for free. Sometime soon I hope to work off of your design. Thanks.

Okay, I've had enough requests to justify putting up a page about some of the details of my jib.  I've always thought my jib to be very crude and poorly built, but it does work well and people can definitely get some ideas and build a better one, so here is the link:
