Collar question for gimbal
« on: February 15, 2004, 05:41:00 PM »

I have a question regarding the collar around the bearing I have found a 1652 bearing that measures 2 12 x 1 18 x 58 I need a collar to attach it to handle any suggestions?

Also, how does the set screws prevent the bearing from sliding down the pole? and support the weight of camera?

Thanks,

ed

P.S. building is not the real problem it is finding the suppliers that will sell you 1 or 2 pieces instead of the minimum order of 50.

Ed,

Look for 3" Aluminum seamless pipe, schedule 40. Its got 1/4" walls so its ID is 2-1/2". Look under "Metal" or "Steel" in the phone book to find suppliers. They'll usually sell you any length you want (1" in this case) but charge you a cutting fee that can be more than the cost of the metal.

Good luck,

Bruce

Thanks Bruce for info.

My question still is how does the collar prevent the bearing from sliding down the pole?

The set screws look like they just push into the bearing, which keeps it inside the collar by wedging it between the screws on the opposite sides.  The bearing itself is held to the pole by means of wedging the monopod pole into it.  Since the monopod clamps are used to lock down the poles, it will stay in place.  Cody had mentioned something to me in another post about this, perhaps another way of doing it (instead of using set screws).  The topic is here:

Maybe that helps.

Hi Ed

The bearing will not slide down the pole, it can only slide UP the pole.  Gravity is the key factor here, causing the sled to pull towards the ground.  The bearing is held to the handle and the arm, so it stays where it is at.  But the bearing cannot slide up the pole because there is a pipe inside the bearing that is clamped to the sled.  The pipe is wider than the ID of the bearing, so the bearing cannot slide on it.

Now if the gimbal were placed upside-down on the sled, then the bearing might slip off and fail.
