Obviously by modifying the stage and bottom plates and the gimbal bearing (for size reasons) you can change it. I was just wondering if there were other monopods that could be used with the existing design? Brett

You bet, Brett. If I had to build another one, I'd user a larger diameter monopod. Find a larger pan bearing that will fit the new size monopod and then of course find a larger diameter pipe to encase the bearing. The yoke dimensions will need to be increased to accomodate the larger pipe. Everything else can stay the same. Cody

Having bought the pan bearing before buying the monopod (I'm still looking for the best/cheapest price,) does anybody know if I can use the Bogen 3016 with the bearing or does it have to be the Manfrotto 679? Maybe my question should be "Were there any dimensional changes between the Bogen 3016 & the Manfrotto 679?" Jason

Page 7 of your plans says "a Manfrotto 679 is also referred to as a Bogen 3016". Perhaps you have one of my old versions where that wasn't stated, or you might have just missed it. In any case, you should be set to go. And Brett - I reread your first question again just now and realized you might have been asking me if there were other monopods with the same dimensions as the 679. If that is the case, I am not sure. I don't know the dimensions of any other monopods. It would be nice if they were stated in the descriptions.
